Just a short tutorial on baking occlusion in maya using bake sets and mental ray, click on the thumbnail for the three step tutorial.

On another note, this method works very good for baking occlusion on highpoly objects without UV’s as well, just choose to bake it to a Vertex Bake Set instead of a Texture Bake Set.
